Short internship projects for CNAM (2025 Summer)

in the Sustainable Systems and Methods lab (SSM)
with Prof. David

Join the Sustainable Systems and Methods lab (SSM) in the Department of Computing and Software at McMaster University, the university with the #1 industry impact world-wide! You’ll have a chance to work with Prof. David‘s team on a variety of topics, including AI, digital twins, and various topics in software engineering.

Topics and background

At this time, we are able to host interns to work on the following topics: LLMs, reinforcement learning, DevOps, green computing and green AI, and empirical software engineering.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be proficient in these topics. We only expect the following skills:
– strong OO programming skills, preferably in Python;
– reasonable experience with git;
– sufficient command in English.
Anything beyond these is considered an asset (e.g., experience with machine learning frameworks, experience with energy profilers for source code, etc).

Output

We are a publication-focused research lab and your work could be part of one of our upcoming publications. For this, we need someone who’s dedicated to research and is an excellent team player.
A publication is a decent boost for your CV regardless whether you plan to go to industry or stay in academia. I have a solid history of publishing with undergrads, grads, and postdocs.

Application criteria

Here are some hard criteria to save both of us some time. Please apply only if…

1. …this is your sole application and you haven’t applied for an internship in other labs. Our time resources are limited and as a policy, we don’t compete with other labs for interns.
2. …your finances are covered. We won’t be able to reimburse your costs. With that said, we have regular lab events, which are funded by the lab.
3. …you can identify one or two of my topics that you’re interested in.
